The Sakrebailu Elephant Camp


The Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is a forest camp for captive elephants in Karnataka. It is considered to be the best camp for training elephants in the state. Situated at a distance of 14 km from Shimoga on the Shimoga-Thirthahalli Road. The camp is maintained by the Karnataka Forest Department. The camp is located on the banks of the River Tunga. The elephants in these camps are trained by skilled Mahouts. This Elephant Camp attracts wildlife enthusiasts and tourists alike. Sakrebailu is an eco-tourism center that offers an opportunity for general people to look at the huge tuskers from close quarters. Many wild elephants residing in the forest also visit the camp to enjoy snacks and to play in the backwaters. These wild elephants return to their forests and do not stay in the camp. Sakrebailu is an ideal place to have fun with kids who can enjoy a day with these elephants. The initiative to protect these elephants and let them live in the wilderness has been taken by the Karnataka State Government. Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is a must visit travel destination.





The interaction session allowed between the visitors and the elephants is the main attraction of the camp that can last for up to 2 to 3 hours. Visitors have to reach the camp early in the morning to be able to watch the elephants being bathed in the water of the Tunga River by the mahouts. They can also watch the big animals enjoying their drink and then proceeding towards their feeding area and get a unique time with these giant tuskers. This place holds special attraction for kids as they get to see the large creatures enjoying by themselves in the water. The baby elephants are a fascinating watch. The visitors can watch the ablutions of elephants where they spray water on each other and get scrubbed by the Mahouts. Elephant ride is also provided and is subject to availability.

Trainings for elephants
The camp houses elephants from all over Karnataka need proper attention and training. The elephants may require training or attention due to a number of reasons like illness, behavioral issues, deficiency in nutrition, etc. Elephants that are uncontrollable are also brought in for training at this camp. The camp has experienced mahouts who train and take care of the huge animals. Generally elephants of all ages are trained in the camp. The camp has herds of elephants and baby elephants living. The wild ones are captured and then disciplined. The camp ensures that the elephants are free from any kind of epidemics. Proper care and nutrition are provided to the elephants to keep them healthy.

Things to Do in Sakrabailu Elephant Camp
  • 1      Elephant bathing can be witnessed if you visit before 9 in the morning.
  • 2     Visitors can feed the elephant with the special food prepared by the Mahouts. No            outside food is allowed. Only the food prepared by the Kavadis who are the                      elephant attendants can be fed.
  • 3     Visitors can watch the elephants being fed and even the training activities.
  • 4     Visitors are not allowed to use flash while taking pictures as it might provoke the           animals.
  • 5     Elephant riding is allowed in the camp. The ride will take you to the camp and will          be a pleasurable trip to cherish.
  • 6     Trekking in the camp is allowed. Tourists can enjoy a walk around the picturesque          location and even witness the wilderness of the forests.
