Sirsi, Karnataka

Sirsi is a town in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state. Sirsi is a mountain town which is surrounded by lush green forest and the region is popular for a large number of waterfalls. Sirsi has an average elevation of 1936 feet, and is situated in the heart of the Western Ghats. River Aghanashini takes birth from a place near Sirsi called "Donihalla" and flows towards the Arabian Sea in the West. The river also creates many waterfalls along its path. Sirsi is famous for the Sri Marikamba temple, built in the year 1688. The famous fair 'Marikamba Jaathre', honoring the goddess Marikamba is held by the temple authorities once in two years. This fair attracts thousands of people. Close to the Marikamba temple are the temples dedicated to Maha Ganapati and Shri Gopalakrishna.

BANAVASI

Banavasi is the first Kannada capital which is ruled by Kadamba dynasty. At present it is announced as one of the rural tourist place by UNDP. The place is known for historical Madhukeshwara Temple. The idol is in the color of honey so it is called 'Madhukeshwara'. The place is known to the people from 3rd A.C. The noted ancient Kannada poet Pampa describes it as a place where the eyes can see the treasure of nature. It is a place which has harmonized all religions. The river Varada flows from south to north. Sirsi, Sorab towns are near by for stay. The travelers can visit the place from August to March. This place has a big Nandi statue whose one eye is towards the lord Shiva and other eye towards Devi Parvathi. Other speciality is that when u hit the bell u will hear the sound of chanting ‘OM’ only.

SAHASRALINGA

Traversing in the midst of areca, coconut and banana plantations the forest opens its beauty to the onlooker. The very sound of water moving about is heard in the midst of greenery and all of a sudden river shalmala comes to the sight of the visitors. On the banks of the river there is only forest with the chirping of birds. The shalmala moves gently on rocks and in the midst there are thousand shiva lingas (idols of lord shiva). Where ever one looks he sees shiva idols. The history reveals that sode king Arasappa Nayak had made these idols carved for progeny. On the day of Shivarathri 'Sahasralinga' attracts thousands of devotees. It is one of the important eco tourism spots in the district. The visitors come here from August to March. This place is very beautiful and it’s the best places for people to come here to enjoy the climate and beauty of nature. The rocks are very slippery so one should take care off!!Literal meaning of Sahasaralinga is 1000 lingas along with nandhi status and also you can find Parvathi status too. During summer there won’t be much water flowing but after monsoons flow of water is very fast and can see only few of the status above as some are immersed inside the water.
